Sony has announced the mainnet launch of its Soneium blockchain platform after a four-month testing period that attracted over 14 million users.
The blockchain, developed by Sony Block Solutions Labs, Sony’s blockchain subsidiary, aims to explore the protection of creator rights and equitable value distribution between creators and fans.
Sony Confirms Soneium Mainnet Launch
The launch comes after the Ethereum-based Layer2’s testnet launch in August last year. The testnet saw over 15 million active wallet addresses and 50 million transactions. The blockchain has been developed by Sony Block Solutions Labs and aims to simplify blockchain transactions for creators and their audiences using NFT-based fan engagement systems and an incubator program called Soneium Spark. Sony Block Solutions Labs Director Sota Watanabe said Soneium aims to onboard ordinary people, allowing them to use the tech without requiring knowledge about Web3, stating the blockchain is intended for everyone.
“Soneium is for everyone. I believe that creativity transcends a lot of the boundaries. There is a need to make an entertainment layer on top of Web3 as the finance layer.”
Sony Block Solutions Labs also released a statement about the launch, stating,
“Soneium is a public blockchain—an open network that welcomes everyone without limitations.”
Under The Hood
Soneium is built by leveraging Ethereum Layer2 technology from the Optimism Foundation. The blockchain leverages the OP Stack and Superchain architecture to deliver what it describes as a “blockchain that evokes emotion and empowers creativity.” Soneium aims to bridge the gap between Web2 and Web3 and create an inclusive, accessible, and creative platform.
An Evolving Approach
The development marks a significant shift in how major entertainment companies approach Web3. Sony Block Solutions Labs says the blockchain and other infrastructure it is building will allow it to support broader creator economies and leverage the Soneium platform across its subsidiaries for films, music, and games. The Soneium Spark highlighted this approach, selecting over 30 applicants from over 1,700 applications. Watanabe stated,
“By simplifying blockchain interactions through intuitive platforms and real-world applications, Soneium empowers creators and users alike to embrace the next era of the internet. From protecting intellectual property to fostering global fan engagement, we’re making it easier for anyone to innovate and connect in meaningful ways.”
According to Sony Block Solutions Labs, the mainnet launch will allow the company to expand Soneium’s presence and explore new frameworks and use cases that integrate digital and physical user experiences.
